Claes Wikström, PhD

Claes has 20 years’ experience in higher education, coordinating, leading and developing under graduate and graduate education. In addition, his research field comprises glycobiology and microbiology, focusing on large complex glycoproteins, mucins, and their interactions with commensal bacteria. The complexity of the mucins, large entangled structures where approximately 70-80% of the total mass comprises of heterogenic glycans, forces the bacteria to cooperate in order to survive and grow, thereby influencing both the genotype and phenotype of the human microbiome. Studies of mutalistic degradation of salivary mucins by consortia of commensal oral bacteria and how this affects the diversity and enzymatic activity in the biofilm forming community have been given special attention.

Claes did his PhD in Lund at the Biomedical Center, affiliated with Faculty of Odontology. The thesis focused on the characterization of mucosal glycoproteins, mucins, mainly MUC5B, the main gel-former in the oral cavity, respiratory tract and endocervix. Claes did a post-doc at the Department of Oral Biology, Malmö University, where he later got a permanent position as associate professor/senior lecturer.

During the last 10 years, Claes have been involved in Faculty work at the Faculty of Odontology, Malmö University, including being a member on Faculty board, co-writing the governmental audit of the dental education in 2013, being chairman of the Curriculum committee and implementing the digital learning platform Canvas.
